Allyra Cavidini is the third Immoless, an impossible figure whose very existence exposes the contradictions at the heart of the Deep’s political and religious systems. Born to the demoness Reftha and raised by the Pauci Electi priest Tempus, Allyra was never intended to exist according to the rules imposed by the Troika: Irkalla, the Pauci Electi, and the Darkbadb Brotherhood. Her existence began as a scandal, became an inconvenience, and ultimately developed into a threat to the structures that sought to control her.

As a child, Allyra witnessed the consequences of forbidden love. Tempus and Reftha’s relationship violated laws designed to keep the factions of the Deep separate and obedient. Tempus was lured away under false pretences and Reftha was murdered, leaving Allyra to be raised by an organisation that neither wanted nor trusted her. Unlike the other Immolesses, Stacia and Lucia, Allyra was not regarded as a chosen successor to a sacred role. She was viewed as tainted, an outsider forced upon the Electi through circumstances beyond their control. Behmor’s manipulation of an Irkallan contract ensured that the Electi became responsible for her upbringing, though they showed little interest in preparing her for the role they claimed she would one day fulfil.

Raised on the mining island of Thanata, far from the political centre of Sapari, Allyra spent much of her life neglected by those who were supposed to guide her. The Electi maintained the appearance of training their Immolesses, but much of this was theatre designed to preserve longstanding myths surrounding the Immortalis and the governance of the Deep. Consequently, Allyra entered adulthood poorly prepared for the realities hidden behind those myths. Rather than remaining dependent upon the Electi, she gradually built a life of her own.

Her closest allies became the Baers, a nomadic lycan people whose lives she saved and whose loyalty she earned. Through them she discovered a degree of freedom unavailable within the rigid structures of the Electi. She also maintained a long relationship with Chester, a complicated bond built upon affection, deception, dependence, and mutual familiarity. Chester remained a constant presence in her life, frequently supporting her while concealing truths that would later reshape her understanding of both him and herself.

Allyra is defined by an unusually strong desire for sovereignty. She resists authority almost instinctively, whether that authority comes from institutions, contracts, or individuals. Friendly, curious, and independent by nature, she often responds to attempts at control with defiance, humour, or outright sabotage. She goes where she is told not to go, asks questions she are not supposed to ask, and refuses to accept limitations simply because they have been imposed upon her. This tendency repeatedly places her in conflict with powerful figures who expect obedience.

Much of Allyra’s adult life is spent searching for spaces beyond the reach of conventional authority. She finds refuge in places others have abandoned. The Dokeshi Carnival, deserted following a series of murders, becomes one such sanctuary. Another is the wreck of the Sombre, a ruined schooner resting upon the rocks near Clachdu Beacon. From these unlikely strongholds she pursues her own objectives, often with the assistance of the Baers, while seeking information that might allow her to survive the fate awaiting every Immoless.

When it becomes clear that Stacia and Lucia are destined to die at the hands of the fragmented Immortalis, Allyra begins searching for a way to escape the cycle entirely. Rather than accepting the role assigned to her, she devises a plan rooted in Irkallan law. Her intention is simple in principle but dangerous in practice: acquire Immortalis blood and compel Nicolas DeSilva to preserve her life.

This decision draws her into the orbit of Nicolas, ruler of Corax Asylum and the most dangerous figure she has ever encountered. Before their formal meeting, Nicolas begins appearing throughout her life with increasing frequency. His behaviour ranges from intrusive to absurd. He overwhelms her with attention, fills rooms with apples, delivers endless explanations on subjects nobody asked about, and repeatedly behaves as though they are already engaged in a relationship. Initially, Allyra interprets much of this as theatrical eccentricity. The Electi have left her catastrophically unprepared for what the Immortalis truly are, and she mistakenly assumes she is dealing with something closer to a romanticised vampire than the reality before her.

What Allyra gradually discovers is that Nicolas’s charm conceals something far more dangerous. His son Behmor openly describes him as an evil being, and Nicolas himself views love through the lens of possession, certainty, and control. As Allyra’s quest progresses, the gap between Nicolas’s cultivated persona and his true nature becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. Contracts multiply. Conditions accumulate. Freedom narrows. What begins as darkly comic interference slowly evolves into manipulation, coercion, and psychological warfare.

Despite this, Allyra refuses to become a passive victim within the conflict. She adapts. She retaliates. She learns how to survive within systems designed to consume her. Her interactions with the various Nicolai become increasingly complex, particularly as she discovers that each fragment expresses different aspects of the same fractured whole. She develops a notable fondness for several of them, especially Nicodemus, whose attentiveness and consideration stand in sharp contrast to Nicolas’s possessiveness. Yet the distinction is ultimately deceptive. The Nicolai may appear to be separate individuals, but they remain facets of the same underlying entity.

The central conflict of Allyra’s story is therefore not merely a struggle for survival but a struggle for sovereignty. She seeks the right to determine her own future, while Nicolas seeks to incorporate her into Plan BAT, a scheme supported unanimously by the Nicolai and designed to secure precisely the opposite outcome. Throughout their conflict, Allyra remains one of the few individuals willing to challenge Nicolas directly. Her defiance fuels his obsession, while his obsession repeatedly threatens her independence.

What Allyra fails to fully appreciate until it is almost too late is that she is not dealing with a collection of eccentric suitors. She is dealing with one monster wearing many faces. By the time she understands this, she has already become entangled in a game from which none of the participants intend to let her walk away.
