Phylax is a clown demon of Irkalla, the lover of Scurra, and one of the permanent inhabitants of the abandoned Dokeshi Carnival. Beneath the paint, costumes, and unsettling atmosphere lies a sharp, highly logical mind that frequently finds itself surrounded by people determined to ignore common sense. Although often associated with carnival horror and theatrical absurdity, Phylax is far more practical than her surroundings would suggest.
Her early life was far removed from the carnival she would eventually call home.
Phylax grew up as an orphan on the streets of Sapari. With nobody to care for her and little opportunity for stability, she survived through instinct, intelligence, and sheer determination. Much of her childhood was spent navigating the city’s darker corners, learning how to avoid danger, find food, and endure circumstances that would have broken many others. By the time she reached adulthood, she had developed a fiercely independent nature and a deeply practical outlook on life.
Those instincts eventually led her to the Dokeshi Carnival.
At the time, Scurra was already establishing the reputation that would make him infamous. Amidst the carnival’s attractions, performances, and crowds, people occasionally disappeared. During one of his killings, Scurra encountered Phylax unexpectedly. Rather than fleeing, panicking, or attempting to expose him, she calmly assisted him in disposing of the body.
The encounter proved surprisingly productive.
Scurra was impressed by her composure, intelligence, and willingness to address practical problems without unnecessary moral panic. Phylax, meanwhile, recognised someone whose interests aligned remarkably well with her own. What began with burying a corpse developed into a partnership, and eventually into a relationship that would endure for centuries.
Together they became inseparable.
Whilst Scurra was responsible for many of the deaths and impalements associated with the carnival, Phylax frequently assisted in concealing evidence, disposing of bodies, and ensuring that unwanted attention remained elsewhere. The pair complemented one another perfectly. Scurra provided chaos, spectacle, and violence. Phylax supplied organisation, planning, and common sense.
Their talents eventually attracted the attention of Behmor.
Recognising that both possessed skills useful beyond simple murder, the King of Irkalla offered them tenure as demons of Hell. Their responsibilities expanded to include representing Irkallan interests throughout the Deep and carrying out assignments on Behmor’s behalf when required. Both accepted the offer, though neither had any intention of abandoning the carnival.
The Dokeshi Carnival remains their home.
Long after the rides fell silent and the crowds disappeared, Phylax and Scurra continued to inhabit its decaying grounds. What others regard as a haunted ruin, they regard as a place of comfort and familiarity. Amongst the rusting attractions and abandoned tents, they found something resembling stability.
Of the pair, Phylax is unquestionably the more rational.
Where Scurra embraces impulse, spectacle, and unpredictability, Phylax prefers logic, efficiency, and planning. She has little patience for unnecessary complications and tends to evaluate situations according to what works rather than what sounds impressive. This practical mindset occasionally brings her into conflict with people who are deeply attached to ideas regardless of whether those ideas make sense.
No one embodies this problem more thoroughly than Nicolas DeSilva.
One of the most famous disputes between them occurred during preparations for the Cirque de Nicolai. Nicolas had devised an act in which Chives would ride a tricycle across a tightrope. Phylax made the mistake of observing that wheels do not function particularly well on ropes. The criticism was entirely accurate. Unfortunately, Nicolas regarded it as an unforgivable attack upon his artistic vision.
Determined to punish what he perceived as unnecessary negativity, Nicolas immediately began planning her downfall.
As usual, his definition of punishment differed substantially from everyone else’s.
The resulting revenge took the form of increased authority, additional responsibilities, and an avalanche of administrative obligations. Nicolas buried her beneath forms, procedures, regulations, reports, and exactly the sort of bureaucratic nonsense she despises. What began as a sensible observation ended with Phylax trapped beneath enough paperwork to make even Behmor sympathetic.
To Nicolas, this was comedy.
To Phylax, it was cruelty.
Despite her dislike of administration, she remains one of Behmor’s more reliable operatives. Together with Scurra, she frequently undertakes surveillance assignments throughout the Deep. Their work often involves monitoring individuals of political significance, gathering intelligence, and reporting developments that may affect Irkalla’s interests.
Allyra becomes one of their most frequent assignments.
Throughout Allyra’s travels, Phylax and Scurra are repeatedly tasked with observing her movements and reporting unusual developments. This work suits Phylax considerably better than bureaucracy. She is observant, patient, and capable of noticing details others overlook. Unlike many of the larger personalities surrounding the Immortalis, she rarely feels the need to become the centre of attention.
Although she often appears detached, Phylax possesses a dry sense of humour and a remarkable tolerance for absurdity. Living amongst murderers, fractured gods, tyrants, carnival monsters, and the Nicolai tends to alter one’s standards for what constitutes unusual behaviour. Very little surprises her anymore.
Her relationship with Scurra remains one of the most stable aspects of her life. While outsiders often assume she acts as a restraining influence upon him, the reality is more complicated. Scurra may be more openly chaotic, but the two understand one another exceptionally well. Their partnership succeeds because neither attempts to fundamentally change the other. Instead, they balance one another in ways neither fully appreciates until separated.
For all her association with horror, murder, and abandoned carnivals, Phylax is ultimately defined by practicality. She is the rare individual willing to ask sensible questions, identify obvious flaws, and acknowledge reality even when reality proves inconvenient.
Unfortunately, in a world populated by people such as Nicolas DeSilva, this habit frequently creates more problems than it solves.
