Tanis is Behmor’s Evro, created after the loss of Behmor’s twin sister and original Evro, Aneeka. Unlike most Evros, who emerge naturally alongside their Vero, Tanis was deliberately constructed. His existence is the product of grief, necessity, and one of the most ambitious undertakings Nicolas DeSilva and Webster ever attempted.

Following Aneeka’s execution and the failure to locate her within Irkalla, Nicolas refused to accept the loss quietly. Together with Webster, he sought a way to provide Behmor with a new Evro. Their work took place aboard the Erebus during a violent storm at sea, drawing upon preserved remains gathered from Nicolas’s vast ice vaults. Many of the bodies belonged to Harlon’s platoon, soldiers whose corpses Nicolas had stored for centuries against the possibility that they might one day prove useful.

Tanis was not their first attempt.

Earlier experiments had ended in failure, producing grotesque creations known collectively as the Mutants. These unstable beings demonstrated that the process was possible but far from perfected. Only after repeated failures did Nicolas and Webster finally succeed. Amid thunder, lightning, and crashing waves, Tanis emerged from the remains of the dead as a fully realised Evro.

At first glance, Tanis appears every bit the monster his origins suggest. Massive, intimidating, and visibly assembled from the bodies of fallen soldiers, he resembles a creature torn from folklore rather than a functioning member of society. Yet appearances are profoundly misleading. Beneath his monstrous exterior lies an individual of considerable intelligence, strong moral character, and surprising emotional maturity.

In many respects, Tanis reflects Behmor’s nature more accurately than other Evros reflect their Veros. Behmor is intelligent, measured, and accustomed to operating within systems of law, governance, and responsibility. Consequently, Tanis is far more civilised than figures such as Kane or Chester. While he embodies Behmor’s primal nature, that nature is filtered through the instincts of someone whose life revolves around administration, order, and reason rather than impulse.

This distinction makes Tanis unusual amongst the Evros. He is capable of thoughtful discussion, complex reasoning, and independent judgement. Rather than behaving as a mindless beast, he often displays more common sense than many members of the wider Immortalis family. While perfectly capable of violence when necessary, he does not seek it out for pleasure or entertainment.

Tanis makes his home within the glacier caves of Bratsioca, north of the Irkallan Aperture. There he lives in relative isolation amongst the frozen wilderness. Although the solitude grants him peace, it also leaves him with a persistent sense of loneliness. Unlike Behmor, who spends his days surrounded by petitioners, officials, and family members, Tanis exists largely alone.

Rather than allowing this isolation to consume him, Tanis transforms it into a source of amusement.

Over time he develops a reputation as the terrifying glacier monster of Bratsioca and enthusiastically embraces the role. Travellers journey north hoping to catch sight of the legendary beast lurking within the ice caves. Tanis is more than happy to indulge their expectations. He bellows dramatically from the depths of the glacier, stages intimidating appearances, and generally provides exactly the sort of spectacle visitors hope to witness.

The performance is entirely deliberate.

Tanis understands that his appearance frightens people, so he chooses to exploit that fear for entertainment rather than resent it. What others view as a curse, he transforms into an opportunity. Visitors leave believing they have encountered a terrifying monster. Tanis leaves having thoroughly enjoyed himself.

Those who spend any meaningful time with him quickly discover that the roaring glacier beast is largely an act. When Allyra visits his cave, Tanis abandons much of the performance once he realises she is not simply another tourist. Like Behmor, he develops a genuine fondness for her and sees little reason to obstruct her objectives. He is notably willing to grant Allyra his blood, particularly when doing so inconveniences Nicolas.

His relationship with Nicolas is generally amicable, though not entirely free of conflict. Tanis enjoys reminding Nicolas that not every problem can be solved through contracts, manipulation, or increasingly elaborate schemes. Nevertheless, he recognises that without Nicolas’s determination he would never have existed at all.

One person Tanis never extends similar understanding towards is Lilith.

Although he never knew Aneeka personally, he regards her execution as the defining injustice that led to his own creation. Without Lilith’s actions, Behmor would never have lost his sister and Tanis would never have been necessary. His resentment towards Lilith is therefore both personal and ideological. She represents the tragedy from which his existence emerged.

Tanis’s relationship with Behmor is unlike any other Vero-Evro pairing. Most Evros share a common origin with their Vero. Tanis entered Behmor’s life as a replacement for someone irreplaceable. Yet despite these circumstances, the two develop a genuine bond founded upon mutual respect. Tanis understands he can never be Aneeka. Behmor understands Tanis is not responsible for her absence.

Over time that relationship evolves further.

Recognising Tanis’s loneliness, Nicolas quietly plants the idea of a merger in Baal’s mind. Baal embraces the concept enthusiastically and begins applying increasing pressure to both Behmor and Tanis. The arrangement immediately appeals to Tanis, who sees it as an opportunity to escape the isolation that has defined much of his existence. Behmor remains considerably more sceptical, questioning both the wisdom and necessity of the proposal.

Despite his reservations, the merger eventually takes place.

The result permanently unites Behmor and Tanis, bringing an end to the separation that had existed since Tanis’s creation. For Tanis, the union represents belonging. For Behmor, it represents yet another decision shaped by the people around him. Yet, as with many things in Behmor’s life, the outcome ultimately proves difficult to regret.

For all his monstrous appearance, Tanis remains one of the most approachable and well-adjusted members of the Immortalis family. He lacks the vanity of Theaten, the obsession of Nicolas, and the cruelty found elsewhere within the bloodline. His existence began as an attempt to repair a tragedy, but he refuses to define himself solely through loss. Instead, he transforms his unusual origins into a life of his own making, finding purpose, humour, companionship, and identity where none should have been possible.

In many ways, Tanis embodies one of the central truths of the Immortalis. Even something assembled from death can become something greater than the sum of its parts.
